Spearfish Police take suicidal subject into custody

By  |

Spearfish Police say a suicidal man was taken into custody without incident Friday afternoon near the Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. The incident started when police say they got information about a suicidal person who wanted to visit a child at West Elementary. They say there was no direct threat to the child or school. The school was secured by law enforcement and all schools were placed in a soft lockdown status.

Police say they began a text messaging dialogue with him where he made very clear statements about injuring himself and law enforcement. Police say he was located in a vehicle near the wildlife sanctuary and then went into the hills on foot. They say he was taken into custody without incident at about 1:50pm Friday and will go through the emergency committal process.
