South Dakota Representative Kristi Noem is reaching out to Indian Health Service officials for information about the quality of care provided by IHS facilities in South Dakota.
Noem wrote a letter to IHS Principal Deputy Director Robert McSwain discussing documented instances of patients put in serious danger when receiving care at IHS service units.
She says this letter comes in the wake of IHS service units in Rosebud and Pine Ridge being notified that they are at risk of losing accreditation from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Some of the issues that Noem highlights are staff washing instruments by hand because of a broke sterilization machine, as well as poor infection control measures.
Noem is requesting more information from IHS including which facilities are at risk, and what reforms have been taken to rectify the issues.
