The Rapid City Central wrestling team has some big shoes to fill after losing longtime stalwarts Kolby Kost and Bridger Kraye to graduation from last season's team that finished fourth in the state in Class A.

But the Cobblers have made a habit of fielding top-five teams in the state and that goal remains this season with a strong group of returning athletes, highlighted by sophomore Cael Larson, who took second at 106 pounds last year as a freshman, and Nolan Smith, who finished fifth at 195 pounds as a junior.

Head coach Lance Pearson pointed to some graduation losses for the Pierre Governors, who have won four straight state championships and six of the last seven, as possibly providing an opening for the rest of the state, while also looking to a tough opening two weeks of the season as a nice barometer.

Pearson said, "With Pierre graduating as many guys as they did, a lot of teams around the state are looking at this as maybe an opportunity to put their team up on top of that podium this year and we're looking to be right in that mix at the end of this year. We start on Friday in Mandan, ND and most of our kids if they place will get seven matches over those two days and that's a great starting point as a coach because it really lets you see where these guys are at and where we need to make some improvements".

The Cobblers will head to the always high-powered Mandan Lions Invitational on Friday before returning home for duals with Aberdeen Central and Huron and the Rapid City Invitational the following week.

And in some news from Sturgis today, a couple of Scooper athletes signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers in college.

Scooper girls basketball player Loralee Stock will play next season at Colorado Mines in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference ... while runner Ethan Brenneman, last year's Class AA state champ in the 800 meters, will head to Iowa Western in Council Bluffs to compete in track.

The University of South Dakota women's basketball team dropped No. 23 Iowa State 64-59 tonight, the first time South Dakota has defeated an AP Top 25 team.

Junior guard Ciara Duffy, from Rapid City, led the Coyotes with 17 points and added four rebounds and four assists.
