The 2019 South Dakota State A and AA Gymnastics Championships will be held this weekend in Brookings beginning tomorrow at 9:45 Mountain Time. Rapid City Stevens' Shay Trimble enters the event with the top qualifying score in the floor exercise ...

The event will be held at the Swiftel Center in Brookings ... Mitchell is the defending Class AA team champion while Deuel is back to defend its crown in Class A ... Hot Springs is one of nine Class A teams that qualified for the team portion of the event ... Local individuals who will be competing in Class AA are Trimble and Emirra Returns from Stevens in all-around, Central's Reece Lowe in uneven bars and balance beam ... Local Class A individuals competing are Hot Springs' Tierra Schroeder in all-around and fellow Bison Carlie DeBoer, Jaylen Nachtigall and Jessi Schroeder in uneven bars, Taylor Pulscher and Jessi Schroeder in beam, and Nachtigall on floor and vault. Deuel's Morgan Kwasniewski is the defending Class A all-around champ after winning the vault, uneven bars and floor exercise last season. 181 gymnasts total will compete in the two-day event.

South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball players Logan Elers and Mitchell Sueker were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Basketball All-Academic First Team today. Elers, a junior from New Zealand, holds a 3.9 grade point average in Metallurgical Engineering. Sueker holds a 3.67 GPA in electrical engineering. Jacob Anastasi, Jack Fiddler, Triston Von Nieda, Troy Brady and Trey Smith earned RMAC Honor Roll accolades. The Black Hills State men had Stefan Desnica earn honor roll recognition. On the women's side, Black Hills State had 12 players named to the honor roll, led by Pine Ridge's Cortez Standing Bear, who holds a 3.943 grade point average in Biology. The School of Mines women had four players named to the honor roll.

And with the weather causing school cancellations today some high school events scheduled for this evening have been postponed ... lead among them tonight's Central-Stevens wrestling dual that was scheduled for 7 at Stevens. That dual will be made up tomorrow night with the JV getting going at 5:30 and the varsity scheduled to start about 7 ... Other events postponed are Harding County at Christian girls hoops ... Sturgis at Douglas girls basketball has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 19 as part of a double header with the boys ... Hill City at Douglas boys hoops has been postponed and a Custer at Spearfish hoops doubleheader was also postponed ... we haven't heard on all the makeup dates for those events yet as activities directors still need to figure out dates that would work for schools involved.
