Football season is almost upon us and the Stevens Raiders are looking to capitalize on a strong returning offensive unit as they hope to improve upon a 5-4 regular-season record from last year.
Stevens returns quarterback Teigen Heckel from a squad that took eventual state champion Sioux Falls Washington down to the wire in a 29-28 loss last season in Sioux Falls.
The Raiders will be looking to fill some big holes on the defensive side of the ball, but are confident that the offense will give the youngsters on that side of the ball a little cushion.
Nesbit said, "I think we're feeling pretty good. Coach was saying that its like the best offensive practice he's had in the first week and I think we're really there. The offense is looking pretty good, we have pretty much our whole o-line back and all of our starting receivers. We lost a lot of our defensive starters, we're pretty young, but that was like our offense last year and if our offense keeps up it's easier for the defense to do their job."
Stevens opens the season in Sioux Falls against the Roosevelt Rough Riders on August 24th.
The Raiders will be back West River to take on Spearfish on August 31 before hosting their first home game on September 7th against Watertown.
