State high school rodeo finals open in Belle

The South Dakota High School rodeo season all comes down to the next three days as athletes from around the state descend on Belle Fourche with dreams of the National High School Finals in Rock Springs, Wyoming, dancing in their heads like a bronc floating over the dirt of the arena.

Up to the Belle Fourche Roundup Rodeo Grounds and it was a great day to take in a little rodeo with a friend -- just make sure you had plenty of cold beverages on hand.

Up first we've got some bull riding and here is Belle Fourche's TJ Schmidt. His mom wanted to make sure that we got this ride in tonight and as the only qualifying bull ride of the first go we had to. TJ's bull looks like maybe he decides it's just too darn hot here, but not before TJ pulls out a 46 for the only scoring ride of the afternoon.

And next up we've got the best run of the first go in tie down roping as Alcester's Dillon Sackett gets the job done in 10.25 seconds to win the first go.

In addition to Sackett and Schmidt, leaders after the first go include Jace Engesser and Trevor Olson in team roping; Kadoka's Hunter Johnson in steer wrestling; Belle Fourche's Cooper Crago and Wall's Cash Wilson in saddle bronc; Sierra Ward of Fruitdale in reined cow horse; Dupree's Sidni Ferguson in pole bending; Jenna Fulton in girls cutting; Natalie Leisinger of Highmore in goat tying; Gregory's Blasius Steffen in boys cutting; Sawyer Gilbert in breakway roping; Sydney Maher in barrel racing and Black Hawk's Kaden Clark in bareback.
