STM hosting annual Christmas Classic

The St. Thomas More boys basketball team is currently 3 and 0 and ranked third in Class A ... but the Cavaliers will get a much better idea of where they stand after this weekend when they host perennial powers Madison and Aberdeen Roncalli in the STM Christmas Classic at the Civic Center ...

More will host Madison tomorrow at 8 o'clock, weather permitting, before taking on Roncalli on Saturday night. The Roncalli boys will play Belle Fourche on Friday at 6:30 and the Broncs will play Madison on Saturday. The event also has the No. 1-ranked St. Thomas More girls and the unbeaten Belle Fourche girls hosting Madison and Roncalli.

More head coach Dave Hollenbeck says the games are helpful for more than a few reasons.

Hollenbeck said, "Madison plays very physical. They're athletic, they're big and strong kids, they have a very good tradition in football there so we're playing against some athletic kids and I mean they work really hard. So far they've had a good start to their year and we expect a tough game from them. It's important that we get to play in a setting like that because our goal is to be ready at the end of the year so to get these kinds of teams to come to Rapid City, play on the civic center floor, which is the same as a state tournament, it bodes well for us down the road, I think, to get to play those kinds of teams on that floor."

Varsity games begin both tomorrow and Saturday at the civic center at 3:30 in the afternoon. The Belle Fourche girls take on Roncalli on Friday and Madison on Saturday with the STM girls playing Madison on Friday and Roncalli Saturday.
