The South Dakota High School Activities Association Board approved 6-man football today, which will replace Class 9B, by a vote of 6-1.
The remaining 9-man teams will be split into two equal classes. Six-man football will begin in the fall of 2019. Schools with an average daily membership under 40 males, which would include area schools such as Wall and Harding County, have until the end of October to decide if they want to play 6-man football but they can also choose to remain in a nine-man class.
Some schools in Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Wyoming currently play six-man football.
