Raiders punch ticket to state

The No. 1-seeded Stevens Raiders hosted Sturgis in the volleyball SoDak 16 round tonight. The Raiders swept the Scoopers in their two meetings this season and entered the contest with a sparkling 30-1 record on the year.

Rapid City Stevens hosting Sturgis ... looking to add a banner at Carold Heier after next week's state tournament ... Early in the first set and Carly Buehner comes up with the big block at the net to push Stevens out to the early lead ... Raiders back at it and Elizabeth Schaefer tries to put a little touch on this one ... but the Scoopers are on it and a Sturgis player wearing No. 16, who doesn't appear on any of the Sturgis rosters, my apologies to No. 16 and her family ... puts it away for the kill ... Stevens comes back with Buehner off the nice set from Marlee Schneider ... and the senior hammers that one home ... Raiders are rolling early ... Scoopers hoping to get a little rally going with Kylie Shaw serving ... and the junior picks up an ace as Sturgis closes the gap ... But it wouldn't be enough as the Raiders cruise in this one ... sweeping the Scoopers in straight sets for the third time this season and advancing to the state tournament.

In the other two matches down in Sioux Falls tonight, the 10th seeded Rapid City Central Cobblers took the opening set off of No. 7 Sioux Falls Roosevelt ... but the Rough Riders bounced back to take the next three straight and end the Cobblers' season.

The Spearfish Spartans fell in three straight sets to No. 2-seed Sioux Falls Washington.

All three classes will play their state tournaments from November 17th through the 19th at the Premier Center in Sioux Falls.
