Queen City Classic showcases local talent

It may not be here for long ... but the spring weather meant that it was finally time to get some track and field in ... and the already once postponed Queen City Classic got underway in some beautiful weather in Spearfish ...

Up to Lyle Hare Stadium at Black Hills State we go ... and the hometown Spartans pick up a 4-by-100 win here as they edge St. Thomas More ... Madison Gould, Lyndey Dean, Jalyn Carter and Mikayla Tracy formed that winning relay team ...

A little later, the Rapid City Central boys pick up a 4-by-1 win of their own ahead of a hard-charging Bismarck Century anchor leg ... Jordan Ladson, Kailleb Walton-Blanden, Alexander Knutson and Ryder Garry with the Cobbler win there ...

And here is Belle Fourche star Shayla Howell winning the 400 ... The defending Class A state champ in the 100, 200, long and triple jumps ... also won the 200-meter dash, long and triple jumps in Spearfish today ...

And we close it out with another state champion as Rapid City Stevens' Elizabeth Schaefer takes home the 300-meter hurdle win ... she also took home first place in the 100-meter hurdles today ...

Teams will be in action again Thursday for the Rapid City Track-O-Rama on the South Dakota School of Mines campus ...

The Harry Weller Invitational was also held in Kadoka today and five area athletes picked up multiple-event wins ... led by Todd County's Caelyn Valandra-Prue and Lower Brule's Jayshawn Milton with three apiece ...

Valandra-Prue ... the defending Class A state champion in the 400 meters --- won the girls 100, 200 and 400 ... while Milton took home the boys 100, 200 and high jump ...

Double-winners on the day were Red Cloud's Echo Ecoffey in the girls 100-meter hurdles and triple jump ... Wall's Kylaw Sawvell in the girls' shot put and discus and Bison's Shane Collins in the boys discus and shot ...

Team points were not kept at the event.
