Rapid City Post 22 hasn't missed a beat in head coach Kelvin Torve's first year at the helm as the Hardhats have racked up a 21-4 record through their first 25 games of the 2018 season. Torve, who starred for Post 22 before playing at Oral Roberts and then in the Major Leagues, took over for Mitch Messer, who won four state titles in six seasons at the helm.
Torve said that while he wasn't necessarily expecting this quick of a start to his first season as the varsity team's head coach, he probably should have. And while he admitted that his team still has plenty of work to do with high-powered tournaments in Rapid City, Omaha and Minneapolis on the horizon, he pointed to his pitching staff as being a big factor in the team's success thus far.
Torve said, "I'm feeling great you know, we've played well. We've had the game here and there where we don't hit or don't field well but we really haven't had a game yet where we don't throw the ball well, pitched well, so yeah 21-4 is better than I thought we'd be. But given the guys we have, the team we have and the way they care about each other, it really shouldn't be surprising."
The Hardhats take on Spearfish tonight at Fitzgerald Stadium at 7. Rapid City Post 320 is also playing tonight as the Stars host Sheridan in a doubleheader that started at 5 at Pete Lien Field.
