Lincoln, Mitchell lead after first day of state tennis

The first spring sports state championship of the season is upon us and boys high school tennis players from around South Dakota descended on Sioux Park today to begin the three-day process of crowning six singles, three doubles and one state team champion.

We start things off with first flight doubles and Aberdeen Roncalli's Isaiah Vilhauer serving to Rapid City Stevens' Jamison Pfingston and Jackson Ellis and Ellis uses a soft little backhand here that the Cavaliers can't get to.

Next up it's Pierre's Jace Wernsmann and Matthew Hanson against Sioux Falls Christian's Landon Levenhagen and Daniel Puumala, and Wernsmann does the heavy lifting on this point as he ends up smashing the winner.

A couple of courts down and it's Rapid City Christian's David Greni and Noah Johnson taking on Brandon Valley's Matthew Schmitz and Carson Mork and Schmitz picks one off the short hop to come up with the point for the Lynx.

Back over to Roncalli and Stevens and Ellis takes advantage of a big serve from Pfingston to put away the easy point for the Raiders.

And lastly we have St. Thomas More's David Lust and Cullen Hill taking on Sioux Falls Lincoln's Sam Dobbs and Gage Gohl and Dobbs, one of the state's top players, shows why here as he uses a little touch to get the Cavaliers off balance and finishes them off with the power.

Obviously weather rolled through and delayed play this afternoon and evening but Sioux Falls Lincoln and Mitchell are tied atop the team standings with 300 points after the first day.

Rapid City Stevens is third at 264 followed by Sioux Falls Roosevelt and O'Gorman. STM is in 11th, Rapid City Christian is 17th and Rapid City Central is 19th.
