We start things off with Rapid City Post 22's opener against Gillette and the Hardhats' Ryan Schmidt sends one to the wall in left for a 2-run double to get Post 22 on the board for the first time this season. The Hardhats needed both of those runs as they rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to knock off the Roughriders 5-4 in 12 innings.
Next up we go to the grandaddy of all South Dakota track meets, the 93rd annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls, and Belle Fourche's Shayla Howell does what Shayla Howell does, which is win gold medals. Howell takes the triple jump here with a leap of 38 feet, 10 and three-quarter inches for the Dakota Relays title.
Sticking with the Dakota Relays and here we've got the Class 'A' girls 4 by 800, Luverne, Minn., was leading late, but it's Hill City coming back and winning in 9 minutes and 53 seconds as Marion Hohn anchors the Rangers in a big win for the girls from the Black Hills there.
Back to the diamond with Post 22 and Gillette and here's Post 22's Matthew Hegre showing off a little leather as he looks to be in mid-season form in the opener with the clean play and solid throw to pick up the out. Post 22 is 4-0 to start the season.
And across the parking lot we go for Rapid City Post 320's opener against Miles City, Montana and the tars' Camden Nayman comes through in the clutch for his team as he delivers a walk-off single and drives in Mason Russell for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Stars take their 2018 debut by a score of 2-1.
