Developmental meet kicks off track season

The high school track and field season kicked off today at Sioux Park with the Rapid City Developmental Meet.

It was a bit of an overcast day at Sioux Park, but there wasn't any snow ... so I'm sure nobody was complaining ...

Here, Hill City's Marion Hohn wins the girls 1,600-meter run in 5:34.56 .... Hohn took sixth at last year's Class A meet for the Rangers in that event and is certainly looking to improve on that this season ... and she's off to a great start thus far ...

And here's a familiar name to distance running fans in the region as Bison's Jonathan Burkhalter takes home a heat win in the boys 1,600 ... Bison's Daniel Burkhalter won the 800 and 1600 on the day ... and he is the defending state champ in the 1,600 and 3,200 ...

Later, the Belle Fourche and Spearfish girls are in a tight battle in a 4-by-100 heat ... with the Broncs taking the win ... obviously the Broncs have big goals for this year with all-everything performer Shayla Howell back in contention ...

And here the Rapid City Central girls 4-by-100 team of Hayleigh Young, Emilee Nickel, Peyton Bagley and Lauren Sperlich cruises to victory ...

No team points were kept at the event ... and most of the squads in attendance will take part in next week's Douglas Invitational in Box Elder.
