We kick things off with a pretty much flawless day at Lyle Hare Stadium in Spearfish for the Class A state track and field meet.
And one of the state's all-time greats gets us started as Belle Fourche's Shayla Howell uncorks a 38-foot-plus triple jump here. Howell is the defending champion and meet record holder in the event
We've got another defending state champion here as Todd County phenom Caelyn Valandra-Prue gears up for the 400 preliminaries.
And Valandra-Prue gets a race in this prelim as Parker's Karley Peters stays with her until the very end but Valandra-Prue takes this heat in 58.47 seconds. Peters came in at 58.67.
But the top qualifier in the 400 today was St. Thomas More's Haleigh Timmer, who took second to Valandra-Prue in this event last year.
And the Cavalier runner comes down the homestretch with nobody challenging her as she wins the race in 57.8 seconds and heads into tomorrow's finals as the top seed. It was also a good day for Cavaliers pole vaulters as Jens Christensen won the boys event at 14 feet and teammate Austin Bartunek was third.
Another Black Hills pole vaulter also had a great day as Lead-Deadwood's Carolyn Groeger repeated as cahmpion on the girls side
