Down the interstate we go to Woodle Field in Sturgis for the first day of the Class AA meet.
And Sturgis' Ethan Brenneman heads to the track looking to improve upon a third-place finish in the 800-meter run from last year.
And we're off and Brenneman starts strong.
He comes around on the first lap with the lead over Sioux Falls Washington's Bonheur Mvuyekure.
And we're into the homestretch of the final lap and the Scooper junior is giving it all he has and he leads this race from the gun to the tape, running a time of 1:55.45 to better Mvuyekure, who came in at 1:56.15. Brenneman following in a strong Scooper tradition of middle and long distance runners there.
Next up Mitchell high jumper Carly Haring goes up and over 5 feet, 5 inches to win the Class AA title for the third straight year. Haring topped Watertown's Alayna Falak, who also cleared 5-5 but took more jumps to do it.
