Birkeland leads after first day of Class A

All three classes of girls golf and the Class B boys opened their state tournaments at various locations East River today and Black Hills-area golfers finds themselves right in the mix after the first day.

Belle Fourche's Payson Birkeland, the Region 4A runner-up, is sitting alone in first place after the first day of play at the Class A tournament in Dell Rapids, three shots in front of Region 4A champ Alex Kandolin of St. Thomas More.

Black Hills Conference champion Jade Burr of Belle Fourche is in fifth place after an 83 and St. Thomas More's Emily Kandolin is tied for ninth at 86.

In Class AA action at Moccasin Creek in Aberdeen, Rapid City Central's Erin Trohkimoinen is tied for second after a first-round 80 ... two shots behind leader Sophia Salter of O'Gorman. Stevens' Emmy Sundby is tied for sixth along with Douglas's Molly Schwartz after shooting 10-over par 82s.

In Class B girls play, Maddie Palmquist of Howard and Tressa Bull of Burke/South Central are leading at Prairie Wind Golf Course in Watertown after shooting first-round scores of 84. Philip's Josie Rush is tied for ninth after shooting a 93.

In Class B boys action, Hamlin's Devin Weelborg shot a 76 to take the first day lead at Cattail Crossing in Watertown.
