The Black Hills State track and field teams are competing at the Blue Hawk Invite in Dickinson, North Dakota today, which is the final meet before the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship meet in Golden, Colorado next week.
Most recently, the Yellow Jackets competed at the Kit Mayer Invite, also in Golden, and they won five events, including Wall freshman Allan McDonnell hitting an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the high jump and winning the triple jump. Jonah Theisen also won the steeplechase and on the women's side, Nicole Allerdings won the 5,000 meter run and Tori Moore was first in the steeplechase.
But head coach Seth Mischke says now is the time for his squad to be coming together as a team in what is often thought of as an individual sport.
"In our sport when we get to the chance to be a team ... scoring points and producing some sort of a team effort at a conference meet, we want to be able to cover all of the events with competitive kids and we're getting closer and closer to that here over the past couple of years," Mischke said. "But we definitely have our events that we're going to get our most points in and then we're going to have those events where we're just kind of hoping for somebody to sneak in and get an eighth place finish, or a seventh or grab a couple of points for the team."
The RMAC Conference meet begins Thursday in Golden and runs through Saturday
