Western Dakota Tech celebrates 50th anniversary

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - It's the 50th anniversary for Western Dakota Tech (WDT) and all this week students and staff will be celebrating with several special events all this week.

Today they decided to create a time capsule that includes modern and historic information and pictures. The capsule will be opened in 50 years in 2068. Afterwards they held a celebration kickoff BBQ for students and staff. Other events this week include a scavenger hunt, pie-in-the-face contest, making tie-dye t-shirts and much more. They even launched their very own WDT Magazine which will be a monthly publication. According to the school's president, making it to 50 is an incredible milestone and shows how much technical schools have evolved over the years.

"It's an exciting time in technical education and here are Western Dakota Tech, we just got a lot of excitement going on this week in order to celebrate that long heritage of really strong technical and vocational education that we've been contributing to over the years," said Dr. Ann Bolman, president of WDT. "The skills that we teach here are so important...just the basic foundations of everything that we do in our society, so our students are the ones who go out there and really build literally and figuratively."

On Friday the public is invited to join them as they hold their 50th Outdoor Bash The bash is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will feature outdoor activities such as water balloons and inflatables for children. Afterwards, from 6 to 9 p.m., people can enjoy a free concert by Brandon Jones. Food trucks will be available as well as a beer garden.
