RAPID CITY S.D. (KEVN) - Heading back to school may mean you're attending class in the nation's best state for community colleges.

The study conducted by the personal-finance website, WalletHub, scored states and colleges across 17 key indicators - ranking them by cost and financing, educational outcomes, and career outcomes. South Dakota was ranked the top state in the nation for community colleges systems overall.

Four South Dakota colleges were among the 715 included in the study. Here is how they stacked up:

- Mitchell Technical Institute: 7
- Lake Area Technical Institute: 11
- Western Dakota Tech (WDT): 148
- Sisseton Wahpeton College: 694

"It's a really nice pat on the back to be recognized as part of the best statewide technical college or community college system in the county," said WD President Bolman. "I mean it really just shows our folks how much their hard work and efforts pay off for everybody in the community."

Bolman says she expects WDT to crest the top ten in the next five years.
