State high school basketball tournament will go on as scheduled

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The South Dakota Class AA State Basketball Tournament starts Thursday. While everyone is working to get the tourney up and running, Wednesday's storm does throw a bit of a wrench into the regular process.

The basketball teams made plans to arrive at the Ramkota hotel on Wednesday with the change in the weather, some adjustments were necessary.

"Starting last week most of them started calling and getting prepared to potentially come out on Tuesday to get here a day early and so by yesterday it was all decided," says Marci Reuter, director of sales and marketing at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel.

Now with most rooms occupied for an additional day and the potential of being snowed in, hotel staff need to prepare for everyone's accommodations.

"We have staff in all departments that we already set aside rooms for and will have here because we're going to have a full house and we need people here to attend to them and especially if they can't get out they need to eat on site and be attended to and we're going to need a lot of staff to do that," says Reuter.

At the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, staff members are certain they can clear out the snow from their area so people can attend Thursday. They also have plans in place to ensure the players arrive on time.

"We have folks making sure that they're going to be able to bus them from the hotel to our property. Even if nobody can make it here, that tournament's going to happen because that's what the state does it," says Craig Baltzer, executive director at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
