South Dakota Firefighter Association shares insight on dealing with loss

STURGIS, S.D. (KEVN) - In the U.S, more than 70 firefighters died in the line of duty every year for the past seven years, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Firefighter David Fischer lost his life in Tilford just last week.

Local fire departments and those from outside of the state are demonstrating how they cope with the loss of their fallen brother.

"It's hard for some to grasp everything that's gone on initially but we have the resources to come in and help them talk through things, counsel through things, try to understand what kind of an occupation that we're really in and that this can happen to anyone," said Charlie Kludt, president of the South Dakota Firefighter Association.

LAST, or the Local Assistance State Team is helping out with Fischer's funeral later this week. Kludt says the organization will be in the Black Hills all week working on department debriefing.
