RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – The Kmart in Rapid City failed to survive the latest round of Sears Holdings.
Sears announced Friday that it is closing 80 more stores, including the one on East North Street. The stores are expected to close by March; with liquidation sales starting in January.
Earlier this year, Sears closed 182 stores across the country. Rushmore Mall lost Sears as an anchor store in April.
The City of Rapid City tweeted that the closing of Kmart is more reflective of national retail issues, rather than anything local.
Decision by Sears to close RC K-Mart store not a total surprise w/problems nationally for quite some time. Like other closing announcements in recent past affecting RC with Toys R Us, Sears, Di-Tech-is more a reflection of the nat'l chain and not the local economy or local store— City of Rapid City (@rcgov) December 28, 2018
Sears filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company set Friday as a deadline for bids on its remaining stores in an attempt to avoid the closings.
