School supplies drive helps teachers stock classrooms

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) The U.S. Department of Education says the average teacher can spend up to $479 dollars on classroom supplies without being reimbursed.

That is why this year the Rushmore Mall is hosting a Back 2 School Teacher Supply Drive. Now through Sept. 5, you can donate school supplies for area teachers at the mall. The drop location is at a big yellow school bus parked in front of The Buckle.

They will take school supplies like paper and pencils, gently used items like binders and folders, board games and even Clorox wipes.

"I think every teacher has a different biggest need, I know teaching little kids, we always need Kleenex and Clorox wipes and soap and things like that to help keep our kids healthy and to help teach them good habits," said Amanda Chaney, a 1st grade teacher at Rapid Valley Elementary School. "I know I spend a lot of my own money on games, toys, Play-Doh, puzzles, things like that to keep the kids entertained and give them something extra and hands on to do."

The Rushmore Mall's Teacher Supply Drive will also take larger donations such as a filing cabinet or an office chair. If you are not sure what to donate, you may call them at 1 (605) 348-3378.
