Reconnecting with your kids : Friday's Focus on Fatherhood

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN)- Parents and their kids can get separated for a lot of different reasons.
It can be anything from a criminal justice situation, to a nasty divorce, but sometimes it happens.

So, what do you do if you're a dad in that situation?
Where do you even start?

John Gordon leads the "Fatherhood First" program for Youth and Family Services in Rapid City, and shares a couple thoughts on the subject.

"It can be challenging for a lot of reasons. If they have relationships they need to repair with perhaps the child's mother, the child's grandparents, there is a lot of repair that needs to be done from the top down," Gordon says.

"But if a father is truly, truly wanting to get back into his child's life, I always recommend that he take it slow and move towards reconciliation with all parts of the child's family members and it builds from there," he says.
