Rapid City moves forward on shift to the east

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The first steps in the development of an urban commercial zoning district, which will help in the advancement of the East of Fifth district, were taken by the Rapid City Planning Commission.

The planning commission recently approved the initial step in the formal process of creating the urban commercial zoning district, which was recommended in the downtown master plan.

The boundaries of the 50-acre district would generally be from Fourth Street to the South Dakota School of Mines campus.

Approved uses in the urban commercial zoning district would be similar to uses allowed in the city's central business district and would also include housing and innovation uses.

Development in the new district will allow for greater density through increased building height, lot coverage and reduced setbacks.

The city's Legal and Finance Committee will take up the proposal on Wednesday; and the city council is scheduled to review the item at its Feb. 20 meeting.
