New female leadership in Rapid City Council makes history
CORRECTION **Amanda Scott and Becky Drury are actually the second female president and vice-president team to serve at the same time on the Rapid City Council. The information in our original story was provided by the city of Rapid City.**
On Monday night two Rapid City women made history by becoming the first women to hold the council's top two positions during the same term.
Rapid City Council elected Ward Four council member Amanda Scott as council president and Ward One council member Becky Drury as council Vice-President.
The roles of council president and V.P. are serving the city in a leadership capacity, overseeing Committee operations, and making appearances at community functions.
In the 1990s Karen Bulman and the late Carole Hillard served in council leadership posts, but the presidency and vice presidency were never held by women at the same time.
"There's a lot more involvement when you serve on the top two positions. That's why I'm looking forward to serving with Becky Drury. Although she's new to the city council, she's prepared. I talked to her and she's prepared to be a go-getter and to get out there and help me so I think between the two of us, we'll be able to get the communication back to the council that the council needs," Amanda Scott said, newly elected city council president.
Scott and Drury succeed Jason Salamun and Chad Lewis respectively.
They were elected during the regularly scheduled city council meeting.
