More air travel options could be coming to Rapid City

People in Rapid City might be getting more options when it comes to air travel.

The Rapid City Regional Airport recently received the Small Community Air Service Development Grant.

The $700,000 grant is intended to provide year-round, daily non-stop service to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with American Airlines.

They currently have non-stop service with Allegiant Air to Gateway Airport, but executive director Patrick Dame says Sky Harbor would allow for more connecting flights, which would be great for tourism.

"It's a good market to get into, the southwestern United States. The more direct we can get into that area, the better. Also, for our business community, to be able to connect to the Phoenix area is a good business connection. We also have in the winter time a lot of snowbirds who do head into that area of the country as well," Patrick Dame, executive director, Rapid City Regional Airport.

Dame says they are still working with the airline on a new route and hope to get something underway in the near future.
