The Mega Millions jackpot is now at an estimated $540 million dollars, and with the drawing Friday night, many are out buying last-minute tickets.
This jackpot is the third largest in the game's history, and if you're fortunate enough to win, you could opt for the $380 million dollar one-time payout. We talked to a couple who already have their plans made if their ticket holds the winning numbers.
Nancy Lundblade says, "I have two tickets for myself, and I'm going to spend the money wisely. I'm going to buy a Harley or whatever I can and we're going to tour the country."
Leroy Lundblade says, "My wife got me two tickets today, and if I win, I'm buying a Harley and the Harley shop!"
President of Kahler Financial Group Rick Kahler says, "Some studies show that people can blow through the entire amount within five years, so one of the important things for people to do first is nothing. It's called a decision-free zone. Put the money into an account, take a really deep breath, and then begin to assemble a team of advisors that can help you make decisions as to what to do."
Local financial advisor Rick Kahler says he's dealt with people who've come into large sums of money. He says the human brain is wired to make emotional decisions, which means most people would rather spend their winnings quickly rather than save and invest.
