The Fire Information Desk at the Legion Lake Fire, which started Monday in Custer State Park, is now estimating the total size of the fire to have grown to 35,000 acres. They are still calling the fire 7 percent contained. Fire crews say late Tuesday night, high winds led to spotting west of the Wildlife Loop Road, moving out of Custer State Park and creating rapid fire growth. They say the fire was held west of Highway 79 due to successful burnouts. Another spot fire moved south, southeast through Custer State Park.
The fire traveled south through Wind Cave National Park, reaching just west of Buffalo Gap on Road 101. They say a burnout operation around the State Game Lodge Area for structure protection began late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and has been successful so far.
Fire information says no primary structures were lost through the night, but say there have been outbuilding and fences lost.
Highway 79 remains closed from Hermosa to Hot Springs and evacuations for the towns of Fairburn and Buffalo Gap remain in effect.
