HealthWatch: Wire bristle brush to clean your grill

RAPID CITY. S.D. (KEVN) This summer I'm sure many of you are out grilling it is a great season for grilling. But take stock of how you are cleaning your grill if you use a grill brush cleaner that is made up of stainless steel or brass wires you have to be very careful while cleaning the grill because there have been reports of those wires dislodging during the cleaning and being left behind in some type of particle matter on the grill its self. Then the next time you grill, say you grill a hamburger that wire can get stuck in the hamburger and then be ingested. In fact about 100 Americans a year report to emergency rooms with injuries from injecting these small bristles that are made from stainless steel or brass. Those bristles can cause damage in your mouth, throat, or even be ingested into your stomach or intestines. One of the worst case scenarios would be one of those bristles making it all the way into the intestine and starts puncturing a hole in the intestine and this has been reported in medical literature. So make sure you stop using tools with wire bristles to clean your grill, you can use a grill spray which will loosen debris and then follow that by using an abrasive pad of some sort or you can use crumpled up the foil and that works great as well. Have a happy and safe summer. This is Dr. Nancy Babbitt from Creekside Medical Clinic.
