Health Watch: Avocados

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) Avocado is a very unique type of fruit. Most fruits consists of carbohydrates while avocados consist of mostly fats. This fruit is prized for a high nutrient level and all around good flavor and of course for guacamole. These days avocados are known as a super fruit which isn't surprising since they have over 20 minerals and nutrients. There are over 500 types of avocados, they range from size, shape and color. The most common type of avocado is a Hass avocado it is often called an alligator pear because of the shape and bumpy skin like an avocado. They are also very high in potassium and are higher in potassium than a banana and is 77% fat but it is a healthy fat, it is the highest fat plant known to exist. The fats in avocados are really good to cook with as well so you can cook with avocado oils. We think of Mexican foods, guacamole on sandwiches. One of my favorite ways is to put them in a smoothie and they are extra creamy. If we cut avocados they brown easily if we use lemon or lime juice can help prevent that. At the end of the day avocados are awesome and loaded with nutrients many of which are lacking in a modern diet. I'm Cindy Gates dietitian regional health.
