Health Watch: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

RAPID CITY SD, (KEVN) October is breast cancer awareness month and if you've had a screening mammogram in 2018 at a place like Dakota Radiology you likely had a 3-D mammogram. The 3-D mammogram uses a process that creates images of the breast with 1-millimeter slices from 15 different projections. This creates a clear and more detailed view of the entire breast. Breast Cancer is curable if it detected early. In fact, the 5-year survival rate of stage one breast cancer is 100%, the 5-year survival rate of stage 2 is 93%, stage 3 72%, and stage 4 it is only 22%. Early detection significantly improves the prognosis of breast cancer. The 3-D mammogram decreases the callback rate which can cause a lot of anxiety in women but it also increases the cancer detection rate. I'm actually looking forward to having my mammogram this month. So if you think you are due for a mammogram or you aren't sure to talk to your family doctor or call a mammography center to schedule your mammogram. This is Dr. Nancy Babbitt from Creekside Medical Clinic.>
