Gillette business owner wins Small Business Person of the Year Award

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) -- Gillette entrepreneur Tyler Reed Miller proudly holds his shiny new award.
He’s 2018’s Small Business Person of the Year from Wyoming.

“I was flattered to win it. In Wyoming, there’s a lot of tough competition," said Miller.

Miller took over Earth Works Solutions — a nearly 50-year-old construction company — back in 2006. The 60-employee company has grown from mining contracts to producing an aggregate material that’s added to asphalt and concrete for safety.

“It’s a unique product. Our competition comes out of China. So just being innovate has led us to that," he explained.

Small Business Administrator Linda McMahon, who handed out awards to small business owners in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, says the winners showed innovation, growth, and commitment to the community.

“If they’ve bought a business, and grown it, what have they done to make it different? Perhaps they have taken a business out of bankruptcy and built it and grown it and turned it into something. Have they started a business that’s brand new — an idea that they had that they wanted to see succeed?" said McMahon.

Miller isn’t just taking a trophy back home. He’s building a camaraderie with his fellow small business award winners.

“I’ve gained some additional insight into opportunities the SBA has to offer — some of the lending opportunities," he said.

As Miller heads back to Wyoming, McMahon will hit the road in this SBA bus — meeting with small business owners in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

The awards ceremony was part of National Small Business Week, which continues through May 5th. Click "Related Links" for more information.
