Bear Butte fire contained Sunday

STURGIS, S.D. (KEVN) - A wildfire at Bear Butte State Park has been contained after burning nearly 150 acres on Saturday.

The fire was reported around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Multiple agencies responded and the Pennington County Fire Assistance Team brought resources from 10 departments.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Around 11:40 am Saturday morning, a fire broke out on the NW side of Bear Butte in Bear Butte State Park.

As of 7:00 Saturday evening the fire has consumed approximately 100 acres and is only 30 percent contained.

County, state, and federal resources are currently on the scene and fire officials are working on dozer lines to support burn-out operations.

As of 8:00 pm Satruday, we know that there are no mandatory evacuations but residents in the area have been put on pre-evacuation notice.

Anyone in the area should be aware of smokey conditions.
