The American Red Cross is lending a hand after a family escaped their home when a fire broke out early Sunday morning.

Flames had taken over part of the Rapid Valley home and garage when emergency crews pulled up to the scene.

The Rapid Valley Fire Department and several other agencies responded to the call on Green Valley Drive shortly after 4:30 A.M.

All those who live in the home were able to leave unharmed thanks to a working smoke detector, but some parts of the house were not so lucky. The family's pet cat did not make it out of the fire alive and the house, garage, and two vehicles were damaged.

As fire crews continue to investigate, the cause of the fire is still unknown.

The Rapid Valley Fire Department says this serves as an important reminder to make sure your smoke detector works properly.
