SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A custodian is accused of leaving a loaded handgun at the Career and Technical Education Academy in Sioux Falls and then lying about it.
Authorities say 25-year-old Joseph Croal is charged with possession of a firearm in a school and false reporting to law enforcement. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney. A home telephone listing couldn't be found.
Police Capt. Blaine Larsen says Croal reported to school officials Friday that he had found a small-caliber handgun in the bathroom area. Larsen didn't discuss a possible motive.
Larson says authorities don't believe there was ever a threat to anyone at the school. However, the incident led to heightened security at schools in the city Monday.
Superintendent Brian Maher said no immediate decision was made on Croal's future.
