DEADWOOD, S.D. (KOTA TV ) - A corrections officer may find herself on the other side of the corrections system, as she is accused of trying to help an inmate escape.

Koreena Schultes allegedly tried to help Tyler Statler by slipping him a handcuff key back in August.

Reports from the Department of Criminal Investigation show that his plan was to fake suicide and use the key during the transport.

Reports also show they may have been romantically involved.

The Lawrence County State's Attorney says Schultes was let go from her job and is out on bail as she awaits to go in front of a judge.

The State's Attorney says she could face a maximum of five years in prison.

Statler, who was already facing up to 10 years for charges of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute, may now face double the jail time.

Both are set to be arraigned on Sept. 20.
