City of Box Elder receives $777,000 grant to improve water system

BOX ELDER, S.D. (KEVN) - The City of Box Elder received $770,000 to help with improvements to its water system, according to a statement from outgoing Governor Dennis Daugaard.

The funds are a part of the Community Development Block Grants the governor has given to ten communities across South Dakota.

The City of Box Elder's proposal for the awarded funds is to add two new wells on its line to assist with its population that has increased to more than 10,000 people over the last couple of years. Box Elder currently has three wells on line.

Mayor Larry Larson and President Michael Hanson along with the project manger all say "We're very excited about this grant and it allows the City of Box Elder to continue to insure that our citizens have quality drinking water."

The City says they plan to spend time researching a location for the new wells, hiring a team, and working on getting loans through the state to support the project.

Box Elder city leaders hope to break ground on the location for the wells in 2020.
