Black Hills Business Report: Masala Mart
A new grocery store is bringing restaurant-caliber food to your kitchen in this week's Black Hills FOX Business Report.
Masala Mart in Rapid City offers a variety of goods from South Asia.
The grocery store is divided into different rooms for different groups of items: one room has all lentils and rice, another for spices, and another with ready-to-eat foods like pickles and chutneys.
The owner Al Rodriguez originally opened a restaurant called Curry Masala back in 2006.
After eating food at the restaurant, customers would ask how to cook it themselves.
Al then offered cooking classes, but people would often have trouble finding the ingredients afterwards.
Rodriguez says, "After a week or so we started getting calls. 'Al, where do I get this spice? Where do I get this spice?' So I told them a few stores in town, 'Oh, go around check over there. They'd say, 'Oh, we checked. They don't have it.' So we started with a single shelf."
Al says with this store, he's excited to further share his Indian culture with the community and says the people of Rapid City have done a lot for him.
Rodriguez says, "This is not my store. This is my home. When you come into my home, you are all my friends and family. I want you to eat good food. Have a good experience. Have fun. And be happy and be healthy."
Al says if you can't find the ingredient you were looking for at the store, let him know and they'll order it for you.
Masala Mart is located at 124 East Saint Joseph Street.
They're open on Mondays from 12 to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and closed on Sundays.
