Be the Change: Satisfy your sweet tooth while fighting cancer

STURGIS, S.D. (KEVN) - Are you planning on buying sweets for your sweetie this Valentine's Day?

Well, you can satisfy that sugar craving while supporting the fight against cancer.

We'll show you just how in this week's Be the Change.

The Saving Grace Relay for Life Team is capitalizing on Valentine's Day to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The team made loads of delectable delights for sale from chocolate covered strawberries to peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate to fudge.

Needless to say they were not in short supply of chocolate.

And making all these treats took quite a bit of time.

Ed Pickar, team member, Saving Grace Relay for Life, says, "I know with my own self and my wife, I think we probably spent the biggest share of the week making these things. Saturday morning we got together and assembled all these trays and boxes and hearts and stuff like that."

Nine-year-old Lily Wilson was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma when she was 15 months old.

She's been cancer free for the last six years, but she still bought some chocolates to show her support.

Lily Wilson, a nine-year-old cancer survivor, says, "It's kind of hard to talk about cancer. We do, I did a lot of fundraisers. We talk about cancer at school. I did cuddle bear drives and hair drives and now I'm doing valentines for old people."

Katrina Lim asks, "So this is just another way you can support?"

Lily says, "Yeah."

Last year they raised more than $800 from selling candies and desserts.

All of the proceeds go towards finding a cure for cancer in hoping no one else has to struggle with the disease ever again.

Ed Pickar says, "I think that there isn't a family involved in our community that hasn't had a cancerous situation. Everybody kind of contributes in honor of or in memory of that particular person so that makes it really heartwarming and special I think."

The team still has extra goodies from Sunday's fundraiser.

If you'd like to buy some, call Ranae Pickar at 605-490-8285.

Saving Grace Relay for Life will also have a spaghetti feed fundraiser in April at the Knuckle Saloon.
