The prescribed fire at the Outdoor Campus West has been postpone due to unfavorable weather Friday. The fire department will assess conditions for a burn possibly next week.
A 6.5-acre prescribed burn at the Outdoor Campus West in Rapid City is set for Friday, weather permitting.
The Rapid City Fire Department, South Dakota Wildland Fire and South Dakota Game Fish and Parks, in cooperation with local and federal partners, will conduct the burn.
The Adventure Trail Rx burn according to a release from the RCFD, will have an ecological benefit.
It also will help showcase the benefits of prescribed fire.
“By conducting this prescribed burn in this setting, the Adventure Trail Rx will provide an opportunity to show the benefits of prescribed fire to the public. The area in and around the Outdoor Campus West provides a safe, accessible environment to observe the firing area before and after the burn and will help introduce the concept of fire as a management tool for fire adapted ecosystems in Rapid City’s wildland/urban interface area,” the release stated.
Firefighters will keep the prescribed burn short in order to cut down on the smoke in nearby neighborhoods. People with respiratory issues aggravated by smoke should be aware that the prescribed burn is taking place and make provisions to limit their exposure to the smoke.
