RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The name of a Rapid City man killed in a chase with law enforcement agencies Friday has been released.
Matthew John Lorenzen, 19, was shot and killed after his car crashed on Interstate 90 near New Underwood.
The incident began when Pennington County deputies attempted a traffic stop near South Dakota Highway 79 and Old Folsom Road. The driver sped off, through east Rapid City and Box Elder, reportedly at times shooting at pursuing officers.
Lorenzen crashed after a deputy hit his car. He then reportedly got out of the crashed car with a rifle in his hands. That is when a deputy shot him.
The name of the deputy hasn’t been released.
The state Department of Criminal Investigations is looking into the officer-involved shooting. The final report is typically released within 30 days, after being reviewed by the state attorney general.
