The South Dakota Department of Transportation wants to remind motorists to drive safely through work zones.
Monday is the beginning of National Work Zone Awareness Week.
Reports say nationwide, four out of five work zone fatalities are motorists.
Rapid City Area Engineer, Mike Carlson, says almost anytime you have a work zone, lanes of traffic are reduced, which makes the roads more dangerous.
Mike Carlson says, "Be prepared to stop quickly, pay more attention. Be more diligent. People are walking across you. People are trying to access the highway at various locations where you don't expect them to so be especially diligent this time during construction zones, just to make sure you stay safe."
Carlson also suggests driving slowly and being cautious when turning from side streets.
