A record year for the airport

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - For the second year in a row the Rapid City Regional Airport sets record numbers.

The airport shuttled five percent more passengers than last year, setting a new record of 625,918 customers in a single year.

During the course of 2018, airport staff worked to continue and expand flights to major cities. Right now, there are regular flights to Denver, Dallas, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City.

They also have five seasonal flights and are looking at getting more.

"Having those services has been a good boost to the numbers," said Airport Director Patrick Dame. "As we look into the next summer travel season, we expect that the Charlotte route is going to have more frequencies."

Other seasonal routes include service to New York/Newark, Atlanta, Chicago, and Houston.

"We're continuously working with the airlines to get more service in," Dame said. "Being able to offer more destinations and more options for the people in Rapid City to be able to fly to and also more options for people to get to us is huge for our operation."

Dame says there's also a potential to get a another flight to Phoenix, but they have not yet figured out how to make the plan work with the current flight offered.
