Spearfish restaurant reaches out to federal workers during government shutdown

SPEARFISH S.D. (KEVN TV) - The Green Oven bakery sits in downtown Spearfish and owner Laura Butler loves what she calls the town's sense of community.

This made her want to give back to any local federal employee not receiving a paycheck during the government shutdown. Federal employees can stop by the cafe Friday and Saturday, show your government ID card, and receive breakfast or lunch for your immediate family on the bakery's dime.

Butler knows she will take a loss in profits, but is happy to help anyone in the community out in a time of need.

"This is our family. Whether you know them personally or not. If we don't support one another then what's the point. It's beyond anything political it's a human thing. It's a support your fellow people," says Laura Butler the owner of the Green Oven Bakery.

Butler says she gave 30 meals away Friday, and hopes to feed even more government employees and their families Saturday.
