Asbestos delays remodel for RCAS office building

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Asbestos removal is slowing down the remodel of the Rapid City Area Schools new office location on 9th and Kansas City Streets.

The contractor found the asbestos on two floors of the Rushmore Building. To clean and dispose of the materials will cost a little more than $20,000. If approved Monday night at the School Board meeting, the district will split the cost of the removal with the YMCA. Both the YMCA and Rapid City Schools administrative offices will take over the Rushmore Building.

"We have to have this abated before we move on. I wouldn't say, we are not in a stand still, but you know we have to have these um this material removed in the place where the new beams are going to be installed so we need to get this going right away," says Kumar Veluswamy the vicinity manager for RCASD.

Construction is scheduled to end by summer 2019.
