RAPID CITY S.D. (KEVN TV) - Established in the 70's, the Search and Rescue Department deploys 6 different types of vehicles ranging from Snowcats, to ATV's, and even a tracked suburban.
Volunteers are trained to operate in any environment, even when the roads are obscured by large amounts of snow.
"If the snow is very deep we have larger equipment or apparatus that has either mat tracks which is a rubberized track or also we have snow cats which have a metal track that can go in much deeper snow and a lot farther out into the bad country," says James Dietz the assistant team leader at Pennington County Search & Rescue.
Staff tell us without these machines, it would be difficult to make their way to some of the more remote areas in the Black Hills.
