Don't get your tinsel twisted with this holiday theme.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Every year the School of Mines and Technology tosses out the tech and turns to tinsel for the holidays with a creative theme for it's the annual Holiday Parade of Trees.

Cookies, cider, and a whole lot of decorations provide the backdrop for a push to get canned food donations.

The Student Activities and Leadership Center hosts the event to help generate extra supplies for the college's food pantry. Organizer Cheryl Dillon says the pantry gives hungry students who can't afford food an opportunity to take some from a discrete location.

Every year, there's a unique theme and this year it's Guardians of the Galaxy. Dillon says they're a reason why they take to outer space for a theme.

"This is a little bit of a nerdy school and they like things like Guardians of the Galaxy and we did Harry Potter one year and that was very popular, so we just go with that kind of thing," Dillon said. "We don't got with the traditional."

People who see the trees can vote for their favorite. On Friday, the winners are announced across several categories.
