Rapid City, SD Feeding America reports that last year 5 percent of households didn't know where their next meal was coming from.
One local movie producer decided to get businesses involved to help change the lives of food insecure children in the Black Hills.
It was a conversation with a school teacher that sparked Sean Covel, a successful movie producer, to create the 12 Days of Pizza.
He teamed up with Black Hills Community Bank, Pizza Ranch, Wharf Resources, and the Deadwood Mountain Grand to give kids that might not get a meal this Christmas the gift of Pizza.
The idea has grown from last year and now 48 families have a coupon for one large pizza a day from Pizza Ranch for 12 days.
Sean Covel, producer says, "You know the success of the program last year was taking care of 12 families when they needed it over the holiday season but the real success of the program in general is the fact that now it's been moved to Spearfish and Sturgis and Deadwood and now you know 48 families. Hopefully it's just the start we'd like to see this program expand even further."
Pizza Ranch provides all the pizza for the families and this year they also sponsored a food drive for Feeding South Dakota and donated around 2,000 cans of food.
